$29Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art. One of the main principles of BJJ is that a smaller person can subdue a larger, stronger and more aggressive person. At the core of BJJ is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit.
Since it is generally easier to control someone on the ground than in a standing position, most BJJ techniques are centered around the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground. Once down, the objective is to wrestle for positions of dominant control that render an opponent harmless. This is accomplished through use of leverage, grip, and body position. Students that train BJJ will gain a deeper working knowledge of how the human body works and to what limits it can be pushed.
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It also includes includes combat on shins. This physical and mental discipline is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Battling with all these body parts requires strong physical preparation which forces the the fighter to be very efficient both physically and mentally.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground. Techniques from other combat sports and martial arts are incorporated. Some of the most commonly used martial arts in MMA are Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, and BJJ. A solid combination of these skills is what sets MMA apart from other combat sports.
